Certified translations
A certified translation is an official translation serving as a public document which bears the certification, signature and stamp of a certified translator. In Spain, certified translators are appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The appointment of a certified translator is registered in the Office for the Interpretation of Languages (OIL) in Madrid and either in the Office of the Government Delegate or the Office of the Civil Governor of the corresponding autonomous community in Spain where the appointee practices.
The need for this kind of translation arises from the demands of certain authorities (ministries, courts, academic institutions, etc.). Those organs, whether Spanish or foreign, require that any translation submitted to them be certified.
The following types of documents are among those that might need a certified translation in order to be legally valid:
Birth Certificates
Death Certificates
Certificates of Marriage
Police records
Student records and academic degrees
Sentences and legal rulings
Visas
Contracts and agreements
Minutes
Bank extracts
Deeds
Etc.
Certified translators are also authorised to carry out sworn interpreting jobs, that is, the official oral linguistic transfer between two languages in Courts of Justice.
